Ready – S.E.T. – Go!  – Part I

MaJo Avatar

MaJoVTA Members: It’s week 8 of our 15 week Spring Training Term.

Are you feeling it?

I sure am.

In my experience, it’s always about this point in each Training Term where things can bog down a bit.

Life intrudes: gigs come at us (gotta earn that $$$ yes?), family responsibilities pile up … the list goes on.

Yet what we do here at the MaJoVTA is different.

In a world that often prioritizes instant gratification, the virtues of Stamina, Endurance and Mental Toughness have never been more crucial – especially to high artistic achievers like each of you.

This week, I want to write about these qualities that not only help us overcome adaptations but also enable us to achieve our long-term goals. Let’s explore how cultivating these traits can transform our lives and supercharge our Vocal Training.

Stamina

Stamina is often associated with physical endurance, and that’s not wrong. But its implications stretch far beyond the physical realm. It involves mental and emotional endurance as well. Building stamina requires consistent effort in vocal training and mental conditioning — much like preparing for a marathon.

Research by the American Psychological Association indicates that individuals who cultivate stamina through challenges are better equipped to handle stress and setbacks (APA, 2019). That’s right: Vocal Training makes your whole life better!

Developing stamina also means working through occasional unfamiliarity, discomfort and fatigue. It’s about showing up day after day, even when motivation wanes. This persistence builds resilience, allowing us to face both Vocal Training and life hurdles with confidence.

Endurance and Perseverance are twin sisters. These traits describe the steadfastness in doing something despite difficulty or delay in achieving success. It’s the ability to keep going even when the going gets tough.

It’s also been said: “Enthusiasm is common. Endurance is rare.” This encapsulates the essence of endurance and perseverance: the ability to stay committed to both Vocal Training and Mental Conditioning over the long haul.

Next week, we’ll look at Part II – Mental Toughness and how those who develop and sustain this ability are able to achieve at consistently higher levels of accomplishment.

See you in the room.
