Mastery: Skillset or Mindset?

Mastery:
Skillset or Mindset?

When it comes to Vocal Training, and the physical skills required for singing, the concept of mastery goes far beyond just getting better at something.

When you truly master a skill, there are tangible results. Mastery helps you:

  • foster a deep sense of fulfillment;
  • enable personal growth; and
  • learn resilience.

These results can shape not only how you perform in the studio or on stage, but also how you approach challenges in other parts of life.

Mastery isn’t just about “doing something really well”—it’s about achieving a level of skill and fluidity that comes with continuous practice. Expert performance psychologists say mastery is the result of deliberate practice, which involves moving yourself beyond your current abilities while getting constant feedback to improve.

The more you refine a skill, the more unconscious and instinctive it becomes. In singing, this allows you to perform with minimal physical effort and maximal artistic effectiveness.

In addition to improving performance, physical mastery is linked to mental benefits. Research again suggests that people who train intensely in physical skills experience:

  • increased self-confidence; and
  • improved problem-solving abilities.

When you hit a new performance milestone, perform onstage with a new level of excellence, or master a new Vocal Exercise, the sense of accomplishment builds a positive feedback loop. This is proven to enhance your motivation and mental toughness for other areas of life.

Mastery also teaches patience and discipline. It’s easy to expect instant results, but true mastery requires consistent effort and overcoming those inevitable setbacks. Setbacks can be as simple as missed a note in a song, or a flubbed line onstage. Or maybe you’ve just hit a performance plateau in training.

These all teach you how to handle frustration and difficulties. And that’s an important skill to help you navigate both your personal and professional life – both on and off stage.

Whether you’re working on perfecting that new Vocal Exercise, improving basic musicianship skills, or learning a completely new song in a completely new language, remember that the answer is “Yes!”

Mastery is a skillset—and it’s a mindset, too.

Through mastery of skillset and mindset, you learn how to move through boundaries, embrace failure, and continue improving, physically, mentally and artistically.

So:

Dig in.

Keep Moving Forward.

It’s worth it!
