Here’s Looking At Chew
A recent article by the Idaho Sports Medicine Institute begins like this:
The pursuit of excellence in athletic performance [vocal training, anyone?] is a multifaceted journey, requiring dedication, resilience, and thoughtful attention to diverse aspects of training and lifestyle. Alongside rigorous training and proper sleep, nutrition plays a vital role in optimizing … performance, enhancing recovery, and maintaining overall health. For elite athletes … [and MaJoVTA Members!], understanding the science of nutrition and how it impacts … performance can make a tremendous difference in achieving their desired goals.
The entire article is a ‘content rich’ database for healthy eating and good daily nutritional habits, so I encourage you to read it here.
In the meantime, let’s unpack that first paragraph:
- Dedication – you’ve got to keep at it over a sustained period of time;
- Resilience – sure, you fall off the wagon food-wise from time to time, but see bullet point number one;
- Mindfulness – perhaps the most important component. Yes – we know we should eat right … but do we?
To place the author’s comments in our world, thoughtful attention to your Vocal Training Regimen and overall lifestyle to support your vocal training is probably the most important thing you can do.
And frankly, folks, you should always (always!) be well fed, as well as being sufficiently hydrated, anytime you take a vocal training session with me, or perform your own 30-minute (or more) practice session.
Eating at least something – a power bar, a couple eggs, a protein shake – will put your body (and brain) in the right place to have a successful training session. Do not skip this important part of your ‘warm-up’ routine!
Finally, my strongest and best encouragement to all of you is to mindfully make vocal training something that’s a real, solid part of your life and not just another ‘thing’ you do.
Then, by following both a Daily Vocal Regimen, and assuring proper hydration and nutrition truly do become part of your lifestyle, the payoffs can be super for you!
